What is Broadway Rave? We Went and Investigated

hello world!

Girl, I don't know how this keeps happening either.

Once again, a curated pop culture rave is touring the country and I couldn't help myself- I had to go and investigate. This year I've investigated Video Game Rave, Labubu Rave, and of course the iconic Shrek Rave. I thought I was done; that's a lot of themed raves already! Then I was doomscrolling when I should have been working (sorry, boss) and was slapped with an ad for Broadway Rave. Broadway Rave is self-described as "a musical theatre dance party celebrating the best of Broadway," which I'd agree with to a point.
Broadway Rave is a project by Burwoodland, the same team behind Emo Night Brooklyn and Gimmie Gimmie Disco. The concept is straightforward- a dance party with show tunes for the musical theater kids that outgrew their high school productions but miss the energy of belting Broadway ballads with their friends. Attendees are encouraged to come in cosplay and be ready to sing, dance, and all that jazz. The rave is currently touring the United States with dates extending through the end of 2025.

So what actually happens at Broadway Rave?

We went to Broadway Rave's Las Vegas tour stop at The Space. While the show is promoted as a rave, I'd classify it more as a sing-a-long. There is a live DJ, but there was no mixing or blending songs; songs just played one after another with no transitions. The setlist bounced between musicals like Legally Blonde: The Musical, Wicked, Hamilton, Grease, and KPop Demon Hunters. During songs, attendees were encouraged to hop on stage and lip sync and dance to their favorite tunes.

Is it a rave? No, not in the traditional sense. It's more Hello, Dolly! than hello, molly. I was anticipating club classics and ragers, Benny Benassi meeting Bialystock and Bloom. What I got was advanced theater kid karaoke, which isn't bad, but wasn't as advertised.

Is it fun? Yes! There were some decent cosplays with a lot of women dressed as Alexander Hamilton and several pairs of Elphaba and Glinda besties running around. The sing-a-long was a nice element that brought people together. The song selection was decent but certainly did lean more towards newer shows from the last ten years (RIP Oklahoma).

Would I go again? Probably! The Las Vegas show wasn't overly crowded and everyone was respectful, and the music was fun. The venue also had a seated area which is always a big plus at my big age.
