Why Do People Speak In Movie Quotes?

hello world!

Speaking in fluent movie quotes is an actual thing. Sometimes we talk to each other in quotes instead of genuine dialogue because, in some ways, it helps us better connect with one another. Whether it’s a movie you have seen with that person or you have a shared love of that film, sometimes that one-liner helps us recall those connections. It is said that constantly quoting movies can be because we lack the ability to communicate properly. I don’t think this is true at all.

Movie quotes help us communicate better. We tend to quote movies we watched when we were young or movies that made a specific impression on us. They tell others a little bit about ourselves and where we come from. They are symbols of our cultural knowledge. So what in the world do my choices say about me? Well, most of the movies I quote are generally funny. I rarely quote from super serious movies because that’s just not me. I’m a bit of a goofball. Movie quotes have the advantage of injecting some humor and adding levity to an awkward situation. I’m an introvert with social anxiety, so I tend to be the ridiculous person that tries to find humor in most things and sometimes at inopportune moments. Sorry, not sorry.

The quotes that we use speak to us. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or you are just playing a multiplayer game with friends and randomly yell, “Keep firing assholes!” What do your favorite movie quotes say about you? Enjoy my list, and let me know what quotes are rattling around in your brain pan.

Princess Bride (1987)

“Inconceivable!”

“ Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

“As you wish.”

“You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.”  “You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.”

“You mock my pain!”

“You mean you wish to surrender to me? Very well, I accept.”

Spaceballs (1987)

“I’m surrounded by assholes!”

“Keep firing, assholes!”

“Yogurt! I hate Yogurt!”

“We’re at now, now.”

“I am your father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate.”

“No sir, I didn’t see you playing with your dolls again!”

“May the Schwartz be with you.”

“We ain’t found shit!”

Goonies (1985)

“Goonies Never Say Die!”

“I’m setting booty traps.” “You mean booby traps?” “That’s what I said! Booby traps! God. These Guys!”

“Hey you guys!”

“Sloth Love Chunk”

“First you gotta do the truffle shuffle!”

“Why don’t we just put chocolate all over the floor and let Chunk eat his way through?”

“Kids suck.”

“Slick shoes! Are you crazy?”

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

“It’s just a flesh wound.”

“I fart in your general direction.”

“Bring out yer dead.”

“She turned me into a newt! I got better.”

“Help! Help! I’m being repressed!”

“Ni!”

Ghostbusters (1984)

“Human Sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!”

“Listen! Do you smell something?”

“Back off, man! I’m a scientist!”

“Yes, it’s true. This man has no dick”

Star Wars (original trilogy) (1977-1983)

“May the Force be with you.”

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

“Do or do not. There is no try.”

“No. I am your father.”

“I love you.” “I know.”

“Scruffy-looking nerf-herder!”

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

“Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.”

“You lost your arms in battle! But you grew some nice boobs.”

“Blinkin. What are you doing?” “Guessing. I guess no ones coming.”

“Sorry, but a toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if we don’t get no tolls, then we don’t eat no rolls.”

“King? King? And which King might that be? King Richard? King Louis? King Kong? Larry King?”

Airplane! (1980)

“I am serious…and don’t call me Shirley.”

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.”

Jurassic Park (1993)

“Life finds a way.”

“Hold onto your butts.”

“Clever girl.”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

“Bueller?…Bueller?”

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

“Pardon my French, but Cameron is so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks, you’d have a diamond.”

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures (1989)

“Bogus”

“Be excellent to each other and party on dudes!”

“Excellent!”

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

“Why is the rum gone?”

“He roped a couple of sea turtles? What did he use for rope?” “Human hair, from my back.”

“But you have heard of me.”

“And really bad eggs. Drink up me ‘earties. Yo ho.”

Forrest Gump (1994)

“Run, Forrest, run!”

“Life is like a box of chocolates.”

“Stupid is as stupid does.”

These are my favorite movie quotes that I use in everyday life. What do YOU think they say about me? What are some of your favorite movie quotes, and what significance do they have for you? Did any of my choices bring back fun memories? Let me know in the comments!

I love quoting movies!! It’s one of my favorite things to do! I find it helps add a light color to a conversation and you are so right that it can show you things about a person. My friend and I often quote the movie White Chicks, it’s hilarious. Airplane! is also full of so many great quotes, my favorite is when they are about to take off: “Nervous” “Yes.” “First time?” “No, I’ve been nervous lots of times.” gets me everytime!! hahaha
