hello world!

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 is almost here! The highly anticipated third season is set to air sometime this year, and I’ve been itching for some more Slime content in my life. Luckily for all of us Slime fans, we did get a little something to tide us over until the new season. Visions of Coleus is an OVA mini-series covering a bonus story initially released with the Blu-rays in Japan. Comprising three episodes, Visions of Coleus gives us some extra Slime fun to hopefully get us through the next few months.

Time for a Side-Quest

Rimuruis blocking an attack with his sword. Sparks are flying. Rimuru is wearing a light brown cloak and has a serious look on his face. He is also in the desert.
Even side-quests can be dangerous. (Crunchyroll/Eight Bit/Fuse)

Visions of Coleus takes place between Seasons 1 and 2 and involves Rimuru doing a favour for Yuuki Kagurazaka. Rimuru heads to the Kingdom of Coleus to handle the imminent succession dispute between the elderly king’s two sons. Having infiltrated the kingdom under the alias of Great Phantom Thief Satoru, Rimuru must resolve the situation, and he might uncover some devious secrets hidden in the shadows. Overall, it’s an enjoyable story but nothing extraordinary. This very much felt like more episodes of the anime and not much more. The story kept me interested, and the reveals at the end surprised me a little, but I don’t expect this to be referenced in future seasons. I did like that they made the Scarlet Bond film officially canon by referencing characters in the episodes, so that’s neat.

Friends New and Old

Rimuru is looking away from Sauzer on the left and Aslan on the right. He has an uncomfortable smile. Sauzer and Aslan are smiling and looking at him.
Rimuru is not having fun. (Crunchyroll/Eight Bit/Fuse)

Visions of Coleus introduces us to a handful of new faces, and they’re interesting enough. The two brothers, Sauzer and Aslan, are competing for the throne. There’s also their sister, Zenobia, who is suffering from an unknown illness. These three were fun additions to the series, but I don’t think we’ll ever see them again. Speaking of characters we’ll never see again, we have the main villain of these episodes, Gustav. He was a serviceable main bad guy and responsible for the best fight in these episodes (but he still gets super mega killed). Aside from new faces, there’s a handful of returning characters like Rimuru (obviously), Ranga, Benimaru, and Souei. The Demon Lord Luminous Valentine even shows up briefly, and we finally get to see what she’s capable of (which looked really pretty).

Looking Slightly Better

Luminous Valentine is fighting Violet. Valentine is about to be hit by the attack Violet is charging in her right hand. Red beams of energy are everywhere. It is night, and the stars cover the sky behind them.
DEMON FIGHT! (Crunchyroll/Eight Bit/Fuse)

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has always had consistently great animation, and the same can be said for Visions of Coleus. Eight Bit has once again given this series the attention it deserves, even if it doesn’t have anything exceedingly excellent this time. Two moments in particular stood out to me animation-wise. The first is in episode one, where Rimuru gets really fluid animation for a couple of seconds for no reason whatsoever. It’s strange, but it looks really good. The other time is a fight at the end of episode three. I won’t spoil who’s fighting who, but if these characters appear in Season 3, I worry a little for some of our favourites. We also get a new opening and ending song, and while they aren’t my favourite, they’re still bops. The opening is “Hikari Hanatsu” by Takuma Terashima, and the ending is “Kokoro Travel” by Miho Okasaki.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Visions of Coleus was a fun time that helped to ease my impatience for Season 3. The story was decent enough, the new characters had some depth, and we got an awesome final fight. I’m even more excited for Season 3 and can’t wait for it to drop this year. Visions of Coleus is available in sub and dub on Crunchyroll, and keep it locked to Couch Soup for all of the Slime content for your hungry nerd soul.
