Top 10 New Mega Evolutions In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

hello world!

Pokémon Legends: Z-A has been out for a few weeks now, and I have seen almost everything the game has to offer. I’ve completed every main quest, every side quest, the PokéDex, and even the MegaDex (full transparency, I haven’t completed Mable’s Research yet, but like, low-key fuck doing 1000 battles). Now, after around 50 hours of playtime, I believe I have the necessary qualifications to definitively tell you the top 10 new Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, at least until the DLC comes out.

10: Mega Starmie

The PokéDex entry for Mega Starmie. Mega Starmie is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Starmie is in the background.

This is probably the most controversial pick on this list due to the fact that Mega Starmie looks goofy as all hell, but that’s why I like it. Not every Mega needs to be badass or cool; sometimes it’s ok to have a few dumb-looking Megas. Focusing on Mega Starmie, I find it hilarious. The fact that it grows legs and can run around is both terrifying and hysterical, and I’ll never get tired of seeing this thing run around at the speed of sound.

9: Mega Floette

The PokéDex entry for Mega Floette. Mega Floette is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Floette is in the background.

AZ’s Floette has been unobtainable for the longest time, with many fans hoping we would one day be able to collect this unique Floette. Legends: Z-A finally made this Floette obtainable, and even gave her a Mega Evolution to boot. What I like the most about this Mega is that Floette’s body doesn’t actually change, and instead, the flower absorbs all the Mega energy. It’s a unique and refreshing take on a Mega. It’s also cool how the flower resembles the ultimate weapon, referencing how this Floette became immortal.

8: Mega Dragalge

The PokéDex entry for Mega Dragalge. Mega Dragalge is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Dragalge is in the background.

I don’t know how to best convey why I like this Mega as much as I do, because honestly, I didn’t expect to like anything from Dragalge. I thought its OG design was neat, but I didn’t expect to be blown away by a potential Mega. But then Lebanne Mega Evolved her Dragalge in the story, and I found myself really liking its design. It really is just an overgrown version of Dragalge, but that’s the point, so I like it. This poisonous seaweed dragon is just so odd to look at that you can’t help but come to the same conclusion.

7: Mega Drampa

The PokéDex entry for Mega Drampa. Mega Drampa is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Drampa is in the background.

Drampa getting a Mega Evolution took me by surprise when I first battled one in the story. This little old man of a dragon getting a Mega Evolution wasn’t even a possibility in my mind, but I’m glad that it got one. Having its Mega just be a younger version of itself is ingenious, especially with all of Drampa’s Pokédex entries referring to its youth. So to be able to see why Drampa were so feared is exciting. I only wish it switched out its Normal typing for something else, sort of like regaining an Electric typing or something.

6: Mega Scolipede

The PokéDex entry for Mega Scolipede. Mega Scolipede is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Scolipede is in the background.

I’m not usually a fan of Bug-type Pokémon; they’ve never been my thing. I specifically didn’t vibe with Scolipede as I thought all the talons it had were gross, and I just didn’t like it. That makes it all the more surprising that I really like Mega Scolipede. Maybe it’s because Scolipede gets a bunch of armour and ends up looking like a centaur or something, but I really fuck with this design. I also like how its horns have essentially grown into two giant swords. Mega Scolipede has done a lot to make me not despise Scolipede, even if I still find its normal form gross.

5: Mega Falinks

The PokéDex entry for Mega Falinks. Mega Falinks is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Falinks is in the background.

Falinks is the epitome of lil guys in Pokémon, cause it's just a group of lil guys. So how do you give a Mega Evolution to a Pokémon like that? You turn them into a Megazord with the power of friendship, that’s how. Mega Falinks' design is adorably menacing, with all six lil guys joining together with the power of teamwork to become the ultimate ass kicking machine. I especially love the lil guy in the middle of the stack who is holding up the main guy; he's trying his best to do his part!

4: Mega Emboar

The PokéDex entry for Mega Emboar. Mega Emboar is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Emboar is in the background.

When the starters for Legends: Z-A were revealed, we all knew that they’d be getting Mega Evolutions. Of the three (Meganium, Feraligatr, and Emboar), I only ended up vibing with one of the new designs: Mega Emboar. I love how they took Emboar’s OG design and emphasised Chinese history with its new hairstyle and fire spear. Some might say it’s a bit basic, but some of my favourite Megas don’t reinvent the wheel, but instead just take the Pokémon’s design to the next level. I might also be biased because Tepig was my starter in this game (he was the only correct choice).

3: Mega Froslass

The PokéDex entry for Mega Froslass. Mega Froslass is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Froslass is in the background.

Froslass is such a cool (get it) Pokémon in concept, but I always felt it was lacking something. It just seemed like the middle stage of an evolution line, and I was disappointed when it didn’t get a Mega back in Gen 6. However, Legends: Z-A has given us Mega Froslass, and she looks majestic as balls. Taking the yokai aesthetic to a whole new level with the long body and bigger ice horns, Mega Froslass looks both graceful and evil, and I love it. I wouldn’t want to see her if I got lost in a snowstorm, but as a part of my team, she’s perfect.

2: Mega Chesnaught

The PokéDex entry for Mega Chesnaught. Mega Chesnaught is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Chesnaught is in the background.

It was a crime that the Kalos starters never got Mega Evolutions in Gen 6, but that mistake has now been rectified in Legends: Z-A. And out of the three Kalos starters, I’m confident in saying that Chesnaught got the best one. I already loved Chesnaught, and its new Mega is just perfection. I love how it gets a cape and beard, it’s shoulder-mounted axes that it can just whip out, and that regal crown that just exudes strength. I love Mega Chesnaught, and if it weren’t for the fact that you can only get its Mega Stone through online play, it could very easily have taken the number one spot.

1: Mega Zygarde

The PokéDex entry for Mega Zygarde. Mega Zygarde is in the middle of the image in front of a blue background. The Dex entry is on the left, alongside the Mega Pokémon's stats and type. A faint close-up image of Mega Zygarde is in the background.

Honestly, I don’t know if there’s much to say about Mega Zygarde aside from just telling you HOW FUCKING SICK THIS GUY LOOKS! You can’t sit there and tell me that this isn’t the peak of Mega Evolution. Bro has a giant cannon that fires a laser beam of death, green fire coming out of his head, and an aura that is simply unmatched. Some might say it’s a copout to put Mega Zygarde at number one, but they just can’t appreciate how awesome the absolute unit that is this Mega Evolution.

And there you have it, the definitive Top 10 Mega Evolutions introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, just in time for the Mega Dimensions DLC to drop (yay for time management). This game is filled with amazing Mega Evolutions, and I can’t wait to see what else lies in store in the DLC.

James Gunn's DCU is in full swing, as less than a year after his reboot of Superman, we get Supergirl, who's a bit lost in her place in the world and therefore drinks and is a bit reckless. But don't worry, her dog Krypto is here to pee on a Superman-headlined newspaper for comedy. Seriously, […]
