The wait is finally over. The teaser trailer is finally here for the upcoming Superman movie in July 2025. James Gunn, the director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, is now the head of the DC Comics movie division and is relaunching the brand.
The trailer clocks in at just over 2 minutes and 20 seconds and was the serotonin boost that I didn’t know I needed. Let’s talk about it and see what makes it SUPER.
From the very start of the trailer, you get the feeling that this will be different from what we have seen from both the Snyderverse and the CW Superman and Lois show. The colors are vibrant and stand out. Superman’s suit is no longer a muted blue, and I’m sorry, but the Underoos are back! It may be 2024, but my Supes wears his underwear on the outside; thank you very much! Sure it’s a little thing, but it’s also kinda not. It’s a big deal to a lot of folks. And I am thankful that James Gunn is restoring that one important detail.
The color palette chosen for this movie is very important. It will not feel like the movie was filmed with insufficient lighting from the studio; seeing some of the Snyderverse shots felt like the Justice League movie was filmed with a single handheld flashlight, it’s a welcomed change. It’s bright and lively. Not drab and muted. WIN.
Krypto, Superman’s dog in the comics and cartoons, is finally making his big-screen live-action debut in a movie. Krypto first appeared in the comics well back in 1955. So yes, it’s overdue that this fur buddy finally finds his way to the big screen.
But let’s put this out there…. No harm shall come to the goodest boy in the galaxy or we riot at dawn! Seriously…. No harm to the goodest boy.
Then again, I am fairly certain that James Gunn is aware of that, or he wouldn’t have allowed him to be included in the trailer and let our hearts get attached to the super pupper.
Honestly, Superman telling Krypto to take him home and giving him the cape to pull him caused my eyes to have an allergic reaction and there was this formation of liquid. It’s weird too because it happened the next time I watched the trailer. I’ll report back when we see the movie in the theater and see if it still triggers my allergies.
Again, and most seriously, no harm shall come to Krypto—riot assignments to be handed out in time if it does happen. Honestly, though, we have little to worry about here. Krypto is styled after James Gunn’s own dog, and I have heavy doubts he’d harm or kill off his own dog. Even digitally.
Henry Cavill has left behind the super suit, cue your best Frozone imitation here, and moved on to five lions that form a really big and super cool lion. That’s right, Henry Cavill just wrapped up primary filming for the upcoming Voltron live-action, and dear God in Heaven please don’t allow that movie to suck.
So, to replace Cavill, Gunn and Co. introduced a new man to the suit. His name is David Corenswet. Which at first glance looks like we have Henry Cavill at home. As much as that concept amuses me, he is clearly more than that, and seeing him in the suit was cool.
That’s not what sold me on Corenswet though. Dorky Clark is back.
Dorky Clark is the Clark Kent I grew up with, and I have always associated that version of Clark, thanks to Christopher Reeve. It was the perfect cover, really. There was no way that dorky and klutzy Clark could ever be Superman. It allows him to move about in the real world unnoticed. In my opinion, its the way it should be, but I also know that not everyone agrees with me.
Let’s address the elephant in the room. For as much positivity as there has been online, there is a small pocket of fans who just can’t let us have anything nice. Look, Henry Cavill was great as Superman; you will get no argument from me. And it is certainly not his fault that the Clark side of the Clark Kent/Superman duology lacked depth and was not the Clark Kent that we all grew up knowing and loving. Hunky Clark wasn’t on our bingo cards, but we rolled with it because he was just so good as Superman and some were there for shirtless Cavill. I get it. He’s no Ryan Reynolds, but he’ll do in a pinch.
The larger part of the complaints stems from folks who are fans of the story that Zack Snyder was framing and attempting to bring to the cinema. To be fair, the Snyder movies were decent at best, but I have many of the same complaints about the Snyderverse as I have about any Zack Snyder film. What are those? Lack of character depth and the overuse of slow-motion effects to a point where it nearly cripples the enjoyment of the movie. See my reviews of Rebel Moon on Netflix for a further discussion of this.
It is impossible to judge this movie completely by the trailer, but it gives us some good indications of where we are heading. James Gunn, a true superhero and comic book lover, is trying to do for DC what has been done for Marvel’s MCU.
The look and feel is fresh and comic-book-friendly. It feels like a modern version of the Richard Donner and Christopher Reeves Superman movies to me, and I LOVE that.
And we didn’t even talk about Mister Terrific, Hawk Girl and Nathan Fillion’s amazing bowl cut as Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern. We also have to at least mention Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and how excited I am for him in that role. In the trailer, Luthor hates Superman for just existing. You can see it. I am here for that. Those few things are a whole other article.
This trailer just feels right, and like the symbol of Superman, it’s giving hope.
July 11, 2025, we will get to talk about this in full. Plan on going to the theater and watching the relaunch of the DCU; I think their future is bright.
