Scaredy-Cat Club Presents: Boo, Beasties & Bad Decisions  3 Cryptid Docs for Spooky Season

hello world!

If you love Halloween but your bravery level maxes out at “slightly creepy YouTube rabbit holes,” then congratulations you’re in the right place. The Scaredy-Cat Club has curated three cryptid documentaries guaranteed to make you jump, scream, and maybe question that noise outside your window (spoiler: it's probably the wind... probably).

This image was made to represent a club patch or pin. It has two circles. The center circle has a black cat looking scared on an orange background. The outer circle says Member of The Scaredy-Cat Club in fancy black letters

From the legendary Bigfoot to winged weirdos with glowing red eyes, these beasties are the stuff of nightmares, and we watched them so you don’t have to… but you totally should. Grab your coziest blanket, turn on all the lights, and join us for a terrifyingly fun tour of the unexplained, the unbelievable, and the utterly un-snuggleable.

These ghoulishly delightful documentaries come from the independent film company known as Small Town Monsters, and all of them can be found on their YouTube channel. They also funded all of their films through Kickstarter

Disclaimer:The views expressed in these documentaries about Mothmanwerewolves, and the Boggy Creek Monster are not my own, nor Couchsoup. I merely stumbled upon them during a late-night YouTube rabbit hole, fueled by curiosity and questionable life choices. Any resemblance to truth, legend, or your uncle who swears he saw something in the woods is purely coincidental. Proceed with caution.

This might seem like just another folktale; it’s not…

This Cryptid has a movie based on the events occurring over a thirteen month period that ended in tragedy.  The Mothman of Point Pleasant.  A documentary film directed by Seth Breedlove. It was written by Lyle Blackburn and Seth Breedlove. It stars Lyle Blackburn (narrator), Mothman, Denny Bellamy and Marcella Bennett.

Plot:

Learn the terrifying true story that changed history! In November of 1966 a car full of kids encountered a creature unlike anything they'd ever seen before. In the weeks and months to follow, the monster (now known as The Mothman) was sighted again and again on country roads and around the state of West Virginia.

What makes this documentary so unique compared to others I’ve seen is that the filmmakers actually care about the people of the town and its history. This is not just about the Mothman, this documentary is about the town of Point Pleasant and the people who live and work there. The moment that touched my heart were the home movies of the Silver Bridge collapse. Whether you believe in the paranormal, Cryptids, or not, the fact that many people in Point Pleasant lost family members on that cold December night in 1967 has gone overlooked in documentaries I’ve seen prior to this one. It is one of the main reasons why I recommend this film on your spooky watchlist.

They have been here all along…

Thanks to films and television, we all know what a werewolf is, but do they actually exist?  This next documentary explores that very possibility. It is called American Werewolves and it was directed by Seth Breedlove. Research was provided by Heather Moser. It stars Shane Grove.

Plot:

Each year, dozens of encounters with upright canids are reported in North America. These beings often behave in similar ways, with many reports recounting a creature that is aggressive, ghastly, and disturbing.

This documentary, released in 2022, has a completely different feel from the previous documentary. This feels like someone found a lost VHS tape from the 1980s and uploaded the footage to the internet. Complete with picture warping and skipping. Something else that is different in this documentary is that the eyewitness accounts and stories don’t just take place in one small town in West Virginia. The sightings of these American werewolves a.k.a. Dogmen are split between two states!  Bucyrus, Ohio, and The Land Between The Lakes Recreation Area in Kentucky.

One of the eyewitness accounts that intrigued me was “Shane“ in August 1985. Shane was a high school athlete who was beginning a fitness program, suggested to him by a friend. He had planned to run 5 miles that night and those 5 miles turned into a trail of terror when, according to his account, he was being stalked by something three rows deep in a cornfield that was directly across his path home…

If you have watched shows like Unsolved Mysteries or In Search Of then this is the documentary for you!

"The truth behind the legend"

The Boggy Creek Monster: Truth Behind the Legend was directed and written by Seth Breedlove and stars Lyle Blackburn.

Plot:

This film dives into the long history of sightings of the legendary Fouke Monster spotlighted in the classic horror film, The Legend of Boggy Creek. Boggy Creek Monster shows the decades-long search for the unknown creature said to exist in the swamps and forests around the tiny town of Fouke, Arkansas.

This is the third film that the Small Town Monsters film crew has made, and this is where I discovered them late at night down a rabbit hole on Tubi. Just like with their Mothman documentary, the film crew treated the people of Fouke, Arkansas, with great respect and dignity. They wanted to find out about the truth of the legend, but they also were preserving the stories of the people and the town's history.

What I found interesting in this documentary was that a movie was filmed about the creature in the actual place it happened, and some of the townsfolk who had seen the creature were in the film, helping to re-create the events that they experienced! Turns out this film changed the town’s life for better or for worse; that is for you to decide.

Small Town Monsters have a plethora of documentaries for your viewing pleasure during spooky season!  I highly recommend you check out their catalog to see what other treats you can find…  if you dare!

Well kittens, thus another meeting comes to an end. Be careful going down those YouTube rabbit holes… you know what they say about curiosity and cats…
