Ahsoka Episode 8 – A Bridger Too Far

hello world!

So we’ve come to the end of the road. Still, I can’t let goooooo.

Yes, that’s right! It’s the season finale of Ahsoka, and I’m not prepared. All of the pieces are in place for a bombastic final showdown between Ahsoka and Co. and Baddies Inc. Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and Huyang (David Tennant) have reunited, and they’re on a mission to stop Thrawn from returning to the home galaxy.

Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) are preparing for their glorious return, while Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) have separated and are now on separate paths.

Can our heroes stop Thrawn and get home for family dinner? I dunno. It seems like a big ask to me, but let’s find out!

Preparations

The Chimaera is almost ready to leave. The cargo transfer, whatever that means, is complete, and it’s time for the Eye of Scion to join them.

Thrawn dispatches two TIE fighters to incapacitate the Jedi, striking first, striking hard, no mercy. When questioned by Morgan, he tells her to not underestimate Jedi, especially not one trained by Anakin Skywalker. Even he had made that mistake before, and it had cost him dearly.

MegaMorgan, ACTIVATE

The Great Mothers bestow upon Morgan a great power, a gift from Thrawn. Essentially, it adds reverb to her voice and gives her cool facepaint. It’s totally rad, giving the impression she’s now an Uber-Witch. The cool makeover doesn’t stop there, though. She is also presented with a kickass green tornado sword called the Sword of Talzin (shoutout to Mother Talzin from The Clone Wars). Morgan just got Compound V’d!

Back with the Crab Caravan, Ezra frantically attempts to build himself a new lightsaber. Ezra is surprised when Huyang reveals he helped his master, Kanan Jarrus, build his lightsaber, too. Huyang is old. After using a similar component as Kanan used for his saber, Ezra has a brand-spanking new blue lightsaber.

Finally, Huyang reveals the reasons why Ahsoka abandoned Sabine. Ahsoka believed that she wanted to become more powerful to avenge the purge of Mandalore. Sabine would have been susceptible to the dark side. DUM DUMM DUMMMMMMMMM!

Nice lightsaber, dude

Ahsoka and Sabine talk. To Sabine’s surprise, Ahsoka isn’t angry with her. As her master, she’ll be there for her no matter what, just like Anakin was for her. And as her teacher, she reminds her there is more to being a Jedi than lightsabers. Trust in The Force!

Not So Fast

TIEs! INCOMING!

Before they have time to react, TIE fighters damage the Jedi shuttle and some crab caravans. The engines are badly damaged, so Ezra and Ahsoka quickly jump off and Force-levitate the ship, preventing the shuttle from squishing the crab people below. Sabine uses the only tool available to her: the Holdo Maneuver! With a final burst from the engines, she crashes the shuttle into both the TIEs, destroying them.

The shuttle is down and will take a while to repair, a task that Huyang and crab personnel take on. The remainder of Ahsoka and Co. mount howlers and ride off into the sunset… if the sunset was a creepy old Nightsister fortress.

I’m not angry, I’m disappointed

Captain Enoch reports on the TIE fighters’ successful mission. Acceptable losses to Thrawn. He knows the Jedi will not relent and orders Cap’n Goldface to prepare for a ground assault. A regiment of troopers volunteer for guard duty, knowing they won’t be traveling home. Patriots, all of them. Evil patriots, but patriots nonetheless.

Attack on the Fortress

With the howler-mounted Jedi approaching, Thrawn orders The Chimaera to rain hellfire! Ahsoka, Sabine and Ezra duck, dive and dodge, riding frantically to the fortress doors. The Jedi just manage to crack open the doors and ride in. Sabine helped, but not much.

Infiltration was only the first obstacle. The Jedi are greeted by the volunteer Night Troopers, firing without prejudice. Sabine is hit (AGAIN) as she fails to deflect their blaster bolts with her lightsaber. After Sabine switches to pistols, the three heroes make light work of the regiment. It’s the good kind of massacre.

Unbeknownst to Ahsoka, the Great Mothers are getting down to witchy business again. What are they conjuring this time?

ZOMBIES?!

WTF IS GOING ON?!?!

Green fart mist envelops the fallen Night Troopers, and they all start twitching, moving, and standing up. We got ZOMBIES, NOW? The zombie regiment converges on their position. Needless to say, Ahsoka and Co. are freaked out. Exit stage up. The zombies follow, but Sabine seals blast doors to slow them down.

As the heroes climb the fortress, the Eye of Scion enters the atmosphere. Oh, so that’s what it is! The Eye of Scion is the perfect size to clamp onto the Chimaera. It’s a docking station! It’s almost time to go, and time is running out.

Devil Elsbeth Vs Ahsoka

Enter suped-up Morgan Elsbeth, standing between Ahsoka, Sabine, Ezra and the way to Thrawn. Ahsoka tells Sabine and Ezra to stop Thrawn while she handles business. This is the rematch we’ve been waiting for. A freaking amazing duel begins, flaming Witchsword versus dual lightsabers. What a day to be alive.

Sabine and Ezra make it to the roof of the fortress, where two zombie brutes wait for them. These zombies are bigger and harder than the others, and they quickly gain the upper hand on the young Jedi. One zombie pins Sabine against a pillar, causing her to drop her saber. With all her might, she conjures enough force sensitivity to pull her dropped weapon from the ground and cleave the zombie’s head. Surprise! Sabine can wield the force now!

The Chimaera undocks from the fortress. Too late now! Wait, what do you mean Sabine is going to Force-push Ezra onto the ship? She can’t do that! She’s awful! Why is she so confident? It’s your funeral, Ezra.

Nahhhhhhhh, not having it

IT WORKED?!?! Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. No way that worked. I mean, it’s great for Sabine, but no way. I don’t believe it.

Sabine is about to join Ezra on the ship, but she spots Ahsoka battling against a zombie horde and Morgan Elsbeth. There’s only one choice. Bye, Ezra! Have fun with Hera and Chopper!

Another kickass duel and one destroyed lightsaber later, Ahsoka defeats Morgan, chopping her down with her own sword. Thrawn orders the destruction of the fortress, but Huyang swoops in to save the day, picking up Sabine and Ahsoka. GET AFTER THRAWN! QUICK!

Ahsoka’s Jedi Shuttle tries its best to catch the Eye of Scion / Chimaera Megazord combo, but it’s fruitless. Just before it jumps into hyperspace, Thrawn hails Ahsoka and gloats. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! And, poof, he’s gone. Thrawn wins.

Teasers For Season 2?

Let’s take one last look at the players in this story and how they’re getting on. A perfect way to tease Season 2!

Thrawn arrives in the home galaxy, his ship approaching a planet that looks a lot like Dathomir.

Ezra somehow escapes the Chimaera in an Empire shuttle, arriving at the New Republic fleet. Chopper is the first to recognise him before he removes his helmet. Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is shocked to see the boy she and Kanan basically adopted all that time ago. So shocked, in fact, she stands frozen in place. Give the boy a hug Mother Syndulla!

Shin uses a trick associated with John Cusack in Say Anything, holding her lightsaber up to a bandit camp, asking them to take her in.

Daddy Baylan

Baylan stands in the palm of a colossus statue, looking towards an intriguing mountain range. When the camera pans out, we see that it’s a set of three: the Father, the Son, and the broken statue of the Daughter. The Mortis Gods

Ahsoka, Sabine and Huyang have returned to the Crab Caravan. Ahsoka looks out to the horizon, seeing light penetrate the clouds. An owl-like bird greets her, the Morai. Weirdly peaceful, she tells Sabine they are in the place they are meant to be. With a wry smile, they return to the Noti.

Where Ahsoka was staring, Anakin’s Force Ghost appears, smiling at his old Padawan. Awwwww.

Summary

I’m not crying. Are you crying? I’m not crying.

What a helluva ride that was! Thrawn wins. He is back to reinvigorate the Empire. And who is going to stop him? This series has done a terrific job of building a fantastic villainous character to be a credible threat to the New Republic. It’s not like it’s all sunshine and rainbows in the Senate anyway, so it shouldn’t take a lot for someone like Thrawn to cause it to crumble. Well, unless he keeps dropping clangers like letting a lone Jedi escape your mothership without noticing. That was dumb.

Long Live the Blue Booty

At least Ezra is back. He’s the only person who we know has overcome Thrawn’s weighty intellect. His presence can only be a benefit to Hera and the fleet. But the absence of Ahsoka could be crucial in the coming battles. Could we see Luke, Chewy and Han be drafted back to the front lines as much needed reinforcements?

So, how about Baylan and Shin? Their absence in this episode was sorely felt. Baylan has been my favorite character in the series, and his story has been the most compelling. I’m happy it will continue and that he wasn’t unceremoniously snuffed out, but I’m sad Ray Stevenson will not get to reprise this iconic character again.

Everything points to Ahsoka and Sabine’s story continuing into a further season, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before it’s announced. The Mortis Gods are untapped potential in Star Wars mythology, and I’m here for it!

Although this season didn’t pan out the way I hoped or imagined, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Trust in Feloni, and he will deliver.

For the final time: Long Live the Blue Booty.
