5 Massive Anime Expo 2025 Reveals That Have Us Hyped

hello world!

Anime Expo 2025 was held a couple of weeks ago (I know, I’m late to the party), and with it came a whole bunch of exciting announcements. There was new merch, collaborations, video games; everything under the sun related to anime was given the spotlight over the event, and that includes brand-new anime announcements. Now that I’ve taken my time to collect myself after being knocked unconscious by how amazing the reveals were, let’s dive into the biggest and best reveals of Anime Expo 2025.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2

Like most people with valid opinions, I adored Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. I was already a fan of Cyberpunk 2077, so a collaboration between the game and TRIGGER, one of my favourite anime studios, was a dream come true. The 2022 series was fantastic, a true 10/10, and the definitive ending didn’t leave much room for a sequel. I was content with the 10 episodes of perfection we got, but in the back of my mind, I was always hoping for more stories in this world. Fast forward to 2025, and a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is real!

I cannot describe in words the surprise and excitement I felt seeing this news pop up on my social media feed; it was amazing. TRIGGER is returning to animate the series, and it’ll focus on a new cast of characters with no prior relation to the Edgerunners of Season 1 (although I’m sure there will be a cameo at least). No release date has been set, so it’s most likely a couple of years away, but you bet your ass I will be eagerly awaiting this return to Night City.

Black Clover Season 2

Black Clover was the first anime that I watched that had over 100 episodes when I started watching. 170 episodes is a massive undertaking, but I was committed to watching it all. So I locked in and binged every episode in two weeks (I’m just built different, I guess). But when I finished the 170th episode, there was nothing left. Worst of all, it ended on a cliffhanger, and a big one at that. Sure, I could’ve picked up the manga to continue the story, but it wasn’t the same. I finished the series all the way back in 2022, and for three years, I’ve been waiting for any news about a continuation. There was the 2023 film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, but I wanted more. And now, that long wait is finally over with the confirmation that Black Clover is returning, baby!

A teaser trailer and image were released at Anime Expo, showcasing Asta in a new, powered-up form (most likely a result of his new pact with a devil), and it looks cool as fuck. Black Clover Season 2 is once again being animated by Pierrot and is currently scheduled to drop sometime in 2026, so we’ll have to wait a little longer for the return of Asta and the Black Bulls.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3

The Apothecary Diaries has quickly become one of my favourite anime of the past several years. Since the series started back in 2023, I’ve been enamoured with the story of Maomao, the titular apothecary, and Jinshi, the extremely beautiful Eunuch. The two 24-episode seasons have been a joy to watch, with the English Dub of Season 2 only just wrapping up recently, which leaves me once again desperate for more. I am tempted to pick up the light novels (the source material), but that idea has been put on hold because Season 3 has been officially confirmed.

After the events of Season 2 separated the dynamic duo of Maomao and Jinshi, destroyed an entire clan, and crowned a new Empress, there are plenty of storylines to follow in Season 3. I’m not sure where the story will go, but I sure am keen for more. A studio has not yet been confirmed, but I’d bet that OLM will be returning when Season 3 eventually releases.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2

Similarly to The Apothecary Diaries, I started watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End in 2023, and just like the former, I fell in love. This unique take on the fantasy genre was a breath of fresh air, as the story focused on the aftermath of the Demon King’s defeat, rather than leading up to it. This is thanks to the titular character, Frieren, an elf who can live for thousands of years, so time means essentially nothing to her. But after taking on her apprentice, a young girl named Fern, she started to see life in a new light. Season 1 ended with Fern earning the title of First Class Mage, which is what Frieren’s party needed to enter the Northern Lands, and that is where the newly announced Season 2 will pick up from.

I was worried that this series wouldn’t get a second season for two reasons. The first being that the anime industry, in general, is uncertain at the best of times, with some amazing series not receiving any love after the first season. The second was that the animation studio, Madhouse, is notorious for dropping series after a season or taking forever to make a continuation. The fact that Season 2 isn’t taking a decade to come out and will instead be released in 2026 has me feeling relieved and excited.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Season 4

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World is an interesting take on the isekai genre, where the main character’s main ability is that he can die infinite times and come back to life. It’s a cool idea, and one that I was fully invested in for the first two seasons when I watched them back in 2021. I was fully immersed in this world, but similar to Black Clover, after I binged the two seasons in a little under two weeks, there was nothing more. What made this worse is that Re:Zero is based on a light novel, and if an anime based on a light novel isn’t immediately greenlit for another season after the end of the current one, there’s a high chance it’s never coming back.

So, needless to say, I was very excited when Season 3 was finally confirmed and released at the end of 2024. The 16-episode run was a fantastic return for the series, but the same problem arose when the season wrapped up: silence. I couldn’t handle another three years of radio silence, wondering if the series would continue or be cancelled. Luckily, this time there won’t be years between seasons because Season 4 has been confirmed for 2026. Once again being animated by White Fox, this fourth season will hopefully answer a lot of the burning questions and tie up some loose ends from the end of Season 3 when it airs next year.

These were my highlights from Anime Expo 2025! There were so many exciting announcements and reveals that it was hard to narrow them down to just five. But no matter what type of anime you’re into, there’s something on the horizon for you.
