STAR WARS: VISIONS VOLUME 3 BABY!!!
Star Wars: Visions has been one of my favourite things from Disney+. I’ve loved seeing a variety of animation studios get the chance to bring something new to Star Wars, and I still rewatch the first two seasons to this day. So I’m very much excited for Season 3, which is coming next year, and that excitement is compounded by the anime studios attached. There are some returning faces like TRIGGER and Production I.G., but seeing David Productions and mother fucking WIT Studio in the lineup nearly made me pass out from excitement. But what if you don’t know why you should be excited about these studios (like a certain British man)? Well, that’s what I’m gonna inform you about right now.
A newcomer to the Star Wars: Visions lineup is David Productions. Some of their most notable works include JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and one of my personal favourite series, Fire Force. This studio is hands down one of the best when it comes to awesome fight scenes and sound effects that will bless your ears (the fire effects from Fire Force or any of the stands from JoJo’s). I’m so keen to see their take on Star Wars because I know it’s going to be two things: super flashy and sound impeccable.
Kamikaze Douga is returning to Star Wars: Visions, this time collaborating with ANIMA. Kamikaze Douga made the first (and to some, the most iconic) episode of Visions, “The Duel.” The striking black and white style, mixed with a dash of Kurosawa, made it unforgettable. I’m very much excited to see them take another stab at Star Wars with either a continuation of “The Duel” or something completely new. And with the 3D animation expertise of ANIMA helping out, I’m sure it’ll be a successful second outing.
One of my top two episodes from the first season of Visions was “The Village Bride.” I loved everything from the art style, characters, story, and everything in between. So I was very excited to see that Kinema Citrus (the studio that made “The Village Bride”) is also returning for Season 3. I would love it if they made a sequel episode because there was so much to expand on, but I’d also be ok with something entirely new. Either way, I’m very keen for their episode (it also helps that they make one of my all-time favourite anime, The Rising of the Shield Hero).
Polygon Pictures is known for its use of 3D animation to bring larger-than-life moments to the screen. Their most notable works would be the Netflix Godzilla anime trilogy (that I reviewed last year here), which showcased their knack for creating great giant monster fights. The idea of this team making a giant monster episode of Star Wars is too exciting not to jump on. Just imagine the Star Wars equivalent of Godzilla vs Ghidora, and that’s probably close to what we’ll get from Polygon Pictures.
My other favourite episode from season one of Visions was “The Ninth Jedi” by Production I.G., and seeing them return has made me feel relieved and excited. This is the one episode that I desperately hope is a direct sequel because the world-building in “The Ninth Jedi” was better than some of the live-action series. So many questions were left unanswered, and mysteries were yet to be discovered. While I will love anything this team makes, I will be slightly disappointed if we don’t get a sequel. And after seeing how well they’ve handled the recent Haikyu film, I’m expecting some stellar animation no matter what.
Have you ever heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion? Of course, you have. It’s one of the biggest anime series ever, and the man behind it, Hideaki Anno, is a master of storytelling. So, seeing that Project Studio Q, a CG animation studio that Hideaki Anno helped create, will be making an episode of Visions made me extremely excited. This studio provided some support for other studios in the first season of Visions, so I’m very keen to see what they can cook up. I’m also fully expecting a giant robot fight and the main character to have severe daddy issues (if you know, you know).
I love TRIGGER so much. This studio got me into anime when I watched Kill la Kill for the first time, and I’ve loved the medium ever since. TRIGGER made two episodes in the first season of Visions, “The Twins” and “The Elder,” and both were bangers. The studio’s unique style shined through, and I couldn’t look away for a second. Whether they continue these stories or make something new, be prepared for some true anime bullshit fights with giant lasers and stupid levels of destruction.
Seeing WIT Studio on this list shocked me the most. Not because they suck, far from it, but I never thought I’d see a WIT Studio version of Star Wars. This studio is responsible for all-time great shows like Attack on Titan and some lesser-known shows like Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song (which you should absolutely watch). They are certified masters in fluid 2D animation, which is a feast for the eyeballs, and just imagining a lightsaber duel or space battle animated in their style is enough to put me into cardiac arrest. No matter what this team does, it’s going to be an amazing time.
And that’s just some of the reasons why you should be excited about the anime studios making Star Wars: Visions Volume 3. These new episodes can’t come soon enough, and you can bet your ass I won’t shut up about it for at least a year.
