We finally have a trailer for the next theatrical installment in the Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. People are excited to see the Giant Lizard and Big Monkey team up again (and some have some doubts, which you can read about here). The new trailer showed us a lot but left things mysterious and vague. They’re obviously not going to spoil a film in the first trailer, but that’s not going to stop Me from coming up with some crackpot theories about the new film. Continuing Godzilla Week, here are some Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire theories that are 100% gonna be true.
The main thing Godzilla fans are talking about in the new trailer is the Giant Lizards’ new colour scheme. Gone are the blues and dark greys of the past Monsterverse films; instead, we have pink Godzilla. While this may initially come out of nowhere, there may be an explanation in the previous Monsterverse outing. At the end of Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla is getting thrown around by Mechagodzilla before Kong joins in. The two Titans defeat the robot, but maybe this hurt Godzilla’s pride. Faced with the knowledge that he couldn’t defeat Mechagodzilla on his own, he decided to undergo a transformation to get stronger. This is why he’s encased himself in ice, has larger dorsal fins, and is also pink (because Mechagodzilla had red attacks, and pink is close enough to red).
One of the biggest reveals in the new trailer was the debut of a new, smaller orange monkey. We see Kong encounter this new lil guy as he emerges from the fog, and we all collectively thought, “What a cute lil guy”. However, the fur on this new monkey looks suspiciously like that of the new main antagonist, the Skar King. My theory is that the kid monkey fled his crazy father and went searching for help. They run into Kong, and he’ll take the kid in, and the Skar King will search for their child. There will be a time skip, and Skar King will find Kong and his child and proceed to manhandle Kong, which sets the stage for the eventual Godzilla and Kong team-up.
It’s been hinted at in some teasers and by the film directors themselves that this won’t be the first time that Godzilla has tangled with Skar King. They apparently fought ages ago, with Godzilla coming out on top. I think that Skar King never forgave Godzilla for this and has been spending all his time in the Hollow Earth getting stronger and planning his revenge. I also think that he defeats Godzilla once in the film, probably at the end of Act 2. This will be another catalyst for Godzilla and Kong to work together to defeat Skar King.
A few sections in the trailer gave me ancient cult vibes. In the trailer, our human cast explores what I can only assume is a glowing set of stairs in the Hollow Earth. What I found more interesting was that other humans were already there. They had primitive weapons and clothes, but they looked right at home. We also see Jia (Kaylee Hottie) from Godzilla vs. Kong climbing the stairs in attire similar to the cult of the monkey (that’s their name now). I think that because she can communicate with Kong, she is their chosen one, and they wish to sacrifice her to appease the Skar King. The trailer might also hint at this because when we see Jia reach out to the glow rocks of destiny, particles start coming off her hand. Me thinks she’s not in for a good time.
Based on the first trailer, those were my theories for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. If any of these theories end up being true, just know who had the ideas first. Stay tuned to Couch Soup for the rest of Godzilla Week for even more Godzilla goodness.
