hello world!

Another massive season of anime is underway right now! And there is a lot to choose from, so much so that when you’re scrolling through Crunchyroll, you might be overwhelmed. With all the new series and returning ones, all those choices can be daunting. But lucky for you, Couch Soup is here to give you some top picks from Crunchyroll’s Summer 2024 line-up that are sure to be bangers.

My Deer Friend Nokotan

Imagine it; you’re just a normal high school student living their normal high school life. But one day, you notice a girl with antlers, stuck in power lines above you. Now, after you help the antlered girl (because you’re a good person), you think nothing of it, so keep on with your day. However, it then just so happens that the deer girl you helped is joining your high school, and she’s in your class. Now, your normal high school life gets thrown out the window. That’s the premise for My Deer Friend Nokotan. I’m excited for this show for two reasons. The first is that it’s being animated by WIT Studio (Attack on Titan, Vivy), so I know it’s going to look amazing. And the second is it seems so stupid that it’ll be brilliant. It’s giving me massive Nichijou vibes, which is always good. Episodes will be dropping every Sunday on Crunchyroll.

Tower of God Season 2

If you’ve checked out our review of the first two episodes of Tower of God Season 2 (which you can read here), you’ll know that I’m already on board with this series. I enjoyed Season 1, and Season 2 has kicked things up a notch. Animated by The Answer Studio, this time, we’re following a new player inside the titular tower named Ja Wangnan and his journey to climb past the 20th floor. There are bound to be twists and turns, especially with the appearance of a powerful stranger who seems unstoppable. The first two episodes have got me hooked to know more, and you can bet your butt I’ll be tuning in every Sunday to see this story unfold.

The Elusive Samurai

Why don’t we have more historical samurai anime? It’s a type of series you’d think would be as oversaturated as isekai, but there aren’t as many coming out these days. Luckily, The Elusive Samurai is dropping this season to satisfy my samurai needs. Being animated by CloverWorks (amazing studio), The Elusive Samurai follows Hojo Tokiyuki as he narrowly escapes death at the hands of Ashikaga Takauji. Now on the run, Hojo is going to have to get stronger, forge new alliances, and eventually take back his birthright, the shogunate. This series looks like it’ll scratch that feudal Japan itch I’ve had since I finished watching Shogun. CloverWorks will undoubtedly nail the animation, so every episode is guaranteed to be a banger when they drop every Saturday.

Cardfight!! Vanguard Divinez Season 2

Over the past few years, I’ve started getting into the Cardfight!! Vanguard series. I’ve watched the original series and the subsequent sequels, and I’ve even dabbled in the card game every now and then (I think I understand the rules now). I found the first season of Cardfight!! Vanguard Divinez interesting, and I was keen to see more, so I was very excited when Season 2 was confirmed to be heading to Crunchyroll this anime season. Season 2 (animated by Kinema Citrus, GIFTanimation, and Studio Jemi) will once again follow Akina Myodo after he wins the Fated Clash. New challengers will appear, and the mysteries surrounding the Fated Cards will slowly be revealed. I’m excited to see what happens next, with new episodes coming out every Friday.

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian

Sometimes, all you need to feel better about the depressing world we live in is fun romance anime to remind you that happiness exists. For that reason, I’m looking forward to Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. This romance anime with an oddly specific title is about the story of transfer student Alya and the nerdy kid Kuze. Alya dismisses Kuze for the most part, except for a flirtatious line in Russian. But what she doesn’t know is that Kuze understands Russian, and now their love story can begin. Doga Kobo is animating this series, and my one hope for this is that it’s a funny love story with moments that can make this cold, dead heart feel something again. New episodes will be dropping every Wednesday.

And there you have it, a curated selection of anime titles that you should check out on Crunchyroll this Summer anime season. We’re eating good this season, and that’s not even including continuing series from the Spring anime season, like My Hero Academia and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Keep it locked to Couch Soup for more anime content to feed your hungry nerd soul.

Are you going to check out any of these series? Did we miss any bangers? What was your favourite from Spring? Let us know in the comments where we can talk about how cool it would be to have a friend with deer antlers.
